If you are into miniature gaming I suggest you take a look at the "Middle-Earth Battles" website that has army lists and other information for various important battles in the Lord of the Rings and Silmarillion. Middle Earth army lists for the DBM system are available here and here. A homebrew miniatures system with Tolkien army lists can also be foud here
War of the Ring (SPI)
This is the second edition rules and tables from the now terribly out of print War of the Ring game made by SPI in the 1970's. I've cleared up some of the text and inserted correct spelling where appropriate, but other then that these are the rules people now pay incredible sums of money for on EBay.
Three scanned sections that combine to create an entire mapboard. I tried to keep each section small enough so that it could be printed on letter-sized paper then mounted on a carboard backing. Placement of the sheets should be fairly obvious and you'll note I left "fudge space" to the side of each map and a bit of overlap for the left and right sides. Unfortunately I could not easily do the same for the bottom sheets so there very well may be a really small sliver of missing map graphics when you put the top and bottom parts together. This should not impact gameplay but if it does I will consider rescanning the maps again. Note: These are all zipped BMPs.
These are playaids for the War of the Ring game. Including the charts from the book and an easy setup sheet for force setup in the Campaign Game. The counters are PDF pages covering all the powers. They are not organized to match the force structure from the books so you may need to print off more then one copy.

ERRATA: The "Search Table (J.7)" in the PDF charts file (wotr_Chartspage.pdf) has the X and Y axis data labels reversed. The columns are supposed to indicate the "Number of Characters in Hex" and each row the "Search Points" used to search. (Keep the numerical values and column/row labels as-is; only the X and Y headers need to be switched.)

- War of the Ring: Expansion
These modifications are intended for the Army Game, which as supplied is hopelessly biased in favor of the Dark Lord (who only has to stack units in Mordor and wait around untill the Ring is found). These rules attempt to reflect the fact that Sauron did not know what the intentions of his enemies were, and also give the option for the Western powers to seize and use the Ring as Sauron expected them to. The variant rules also give Saruman a real chance of victory in a 3 player game. Authors: Steve Burt, Martin Burt, John Kleeman, Gordon Barbour.
- War of the Ring: The Great Northern War
This is a a scenario for adding in the battles for northern Middle Earth to the standard game. Originally appeared in THE SPACE GAMER #18 / July-August 1978. Excellent and interesting addition to the SPI game, with allowances for up to five players! Author: Glenn Rahmann.
- War of the Ring: Expanded Three-Player Rules
These rules originally appeared in MOVES #37. They significantly expand the value of the multiplayer game, especially for Sarumon. Author: Eric Goldberg.
- War of the Ring: From Wilderland to Western Shore
Here it is, From Wilderland to Western Shore, an article that originally appeared in the March 1981 issue of the now defunct Phoenix magazine. It is a terrific hidden movement system for the Character Game but can be easily used for the Campaign Game. Author: Geoffrey Charles Geddes (Special Thanks to: Charles Szigetvari).
- War of the Ring: Merciless Marauders
Another set of house rules that add "Merciless Marauders" for the Character Game, and a unique way of simulating the Breaking of the Fellowship. Be warned: Can add a huge amount of randomness to the game outcome. Author: Randy Simcox.
- War of the Ring: 1st Edition to 2nd Edition Changes
This is a summary of rule changes between the 1st and (unlabeled) 2nd editions of the rules for SPI's War of the Ring. Authors: Carl Anthony Watson, Randy Simcox.
Gondor and Sauron (SPI)
These rules cover both of the "mini games" Gondor and Sauron. These cover the final assault on Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring, and a much earlier battle with Sauron's forces, respectively.
These are the special rules just for the Gondor game.
